So
now that the lounge has been constructed, it's time to start building
towards the back of the living space. I decided to start with the right
hand side of the box. The reason for this was purely financial, the
only expensive component is the toilet opposed to the many expensive
parts for the kitchen.
The
shower cubical had only one logical location it could go; between the
generator and the lounge. As luck would have it it's just the right
size for the shower tray and toilet (I had it all worked out in the
master plan!).
The
storage space above the generator was far too large for one cupboard
alone so I decided to split it into two sections. The rear being a wardrobe
for hanging space with room for small storage boxes underneath. Between
this wardrobe and the shower there's a shelved cupboard. I made this
specifically to take large plastic storage boxes and a space at the
top to store the bedding during the day.
The
construction theme continues here the same as the rest of the conversion.
The make up of this is a substantial timber frame which I then clad
over with a thin plywood. For the timber frame I just used a smooth
planed softwood. Once the frame had been built it's extremely solid
and adds to the rigidity of the whole living module.
For
the finishing surface I used a thin plywood as opposed to MDF that would
be thicker and heavier. I used 3mm plywood (the same as the interior
walls) that has a decorative veneer. To adhere this I used Sikaflex
512. Once this
was all put together you end up with relatively light weight but very
strong fittings.
In
standard motorhomes and caravans a slightly different method is employed.
The difference is that the skin of 3mm ply provides much of the strength/rigidity.
A frame isn't built first but it's all used together as they go. Also
the timber used for rigidity is far thinner than I used this is fine
for your average motorhome where weight limitations are a major factor,
but I fear this would not stand up to the demands of a 4x4 camper.
These
next pictures show some storage compartments being built and the decorative
ply going on the outside of the shower...
